Printed from safe PLA filaments.
PLA (polylactic acid) filament is made from . The process involves fermenting these plant sugars to create lactic acid, which is then polymerized into long chains of polylactic acid.

The manufacturing process
  • Fermentation: Starch is extracted from plants and converted into glucose (sugar). Microorganisms then ferment the glucose to produce lactic acid.
  • Polymerization: The lactic acid molecules are chemically linked together to form long polymer chains. This can be done directly or by first creating a ring-shaped molecule called lactide and then polymerizing it.
  • Extrusion: The resulting polylactic acid polymer is heated and melted, then pushed through a nozzle to create a thin, continuous filament.
Cooling and spooling: The filament is rapidly cooled to maintain its shape and then wound onto a spool for use in 3D printers.
