Printed from safe PLA filaments.
PLA (polylactic acid) filament is made from. The process involves fermenting these plant sugars to createlactic acid, which is then polymerized into long chains of polylactic acid.
The manufacturing process
Fermentation:Starch is extracted from plants and converted into glucose (sugar). Microorganisms then ferment the glucose to produce lactic acid.
Polymerization:The lactic acid molecules are chemically linked together to form long polymer chains. This can be done directly or by first creating a ring-shaped molecule called lactide and then polymerizing it.
Extrusion:The resulting polylactic acid polymer is heated and melted, then pushed through a nozzle to create a thin, continuous filament.
Cooling and spooling:The filament is rapidly cooled to maintain its shape and then wound onto a spool for use in 3D printers.
